The Billiard Hall is located on the south side of the Mountain Brook community activities center. The room is equipped with four regulation size (9 foot) tables which were purchased from Las Vegas, Nevada after tournament play.

On Monday afternoons at 1:00 PM, local players gather to play 8-ball. The game involves 15 balls on the table and concludes with the 8 ball being placed into the "called" pocket, after 7 preceding balls have been pocketed.

On Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM, players gather for games of 9-ball. The billiard balls are pocketed in numerical order with sinking the 9 ball being the object of each player to win the game.

The billiard room is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Ladies are welcome to participate. Guests need to be 18 years or older. There is no smoking in the billiard room. However, an ash tray is just outside the door for those who choose to smoke. Also, no food, drinks of soda, beer or wine are allowed. A water cooler is provided inside. Most regular players are open to some questions on game rules. Also, there is a rules book permanently in the game room.

Pickleball

Winter Pickleball Schedule
Round Robin doubles play 8:00-10:00 AM Monday through Saturday.
Lessons: 8:00-10:00 AM Monday through Saturday or
by appointment: Contact Bob & Sue (480-982-3531
or at MBVpickleball@aol.com).

What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a court sport best described as a cross between tennis and
ping-pong. It is played as a singles game or as a doubles game with two people
on each side of the net. Players use a paddle to score points by hitting a 3”
diameter perforated plastic ball (commonly known as a whiffle ball) across the
net without it being successfully returned by the opponent.

When Did Pickleball Begin at Mountain Brook Village?
Organized Pickleball play started at MBV on September 28, 2005. Since that
time more than ninety residents have taken free lessons and participated in
early morning Round Robin doubles play. MBV players are enthusiastic and prove
eager to have their own pickleball paddles with more than 75
paddles already
ordered and delivered. A paddle rack and a ball tube respectively hold four wooden paddles and pickleballs court side for use by residents who want to try out
the game.

How Can I Learn More About the Game of Pickleball?
The weekly Mountain Brook Village Pickleball News and a copy of pickleball
rules can be requested by sending an Email request to MBVpickleball@aol.com or by calling Bob & Sue Flood at 480- 982-3531. A book, The Art of Pickleball:
Techniques and Strategies for Everyone by Gale H. Leach ($13.25) can be purchased court side from 8:00-10:00 AM Monday - Saturday. The Leach
book describes the fundamentals, skill development and fine points of the game.

Free lessons and Pickleball clinics covering various aspects of the game are
held periodically and are announced in the weekly MBV Pickleball News.
Pickleball clinics are aimed at helping players move their game to the next level.

What Are the Basic Rules of Pickleball?
* To serve: Hit the ball with an underhand swing making contact with the
ball while it is at a height below your waistline.
Serve the ball diagonally from one side of the court to the other where it must bounce before it is returned.
* Return: Each return of serve must again bounce on the serving team's
court before it is returned over the net. After the serve and return bounces, each side can choose to hit the ball in the air (volley) or let it bounce once.
* Kitchen:  On each side of the net there is a 7’ non-volley zone (commonly
called the kitchen).  Players cannot enter this zone to hit the ball unless the ball first bounces in the non-volley zone.
* Doubles: The person closest to the door will serve first and continue to
serve until the team loses the rally. Then the other team serves
until both players lose their serves. From this point on each player
from both teams will serve before losing the serve to the other side.
* Scoring:  Each time the serving team wins a rally they score a point. The
game is usually played to 11 points and the winning team must win
by 2 points if no one is waiting to play.
