Aerobics for the Mind

Aerobics for the Mind lectures are on the lst or 2nd Saturday of each month,
10:00 am - 11:30 am, in the Sunset Room.

$2 donation at the door will be appreciated.

Mailing List - We are going to set up an e-mail list of those who are interested in having a means of communicating notices of AFTM events, comments, etc. If you would like to be included on the list, please send your request to webmaster@mountainbrookvillage.org . If there is enough response, you will be notified when the list becomes active.

Current AFTM Schedule:
(March and April not yet scheduled.)

There are a couple of things that we need to bring to your attention:

1.  We are getting toward the end of the season for our AFTM activities.  To date, we have had speakers on Religion, National Healthcare Program, Pinal County Sheriff activities, and Exercise and Health.  For April 7th, we have Dr. Mark Spencer of ASU scheduled to speak to us on  "New Developments in the field of Evolutionary Science."  Please note these on your calendars and please encourage your friends and neighbors to join us.

2.  Regarding our activities for next year, we want your feedback as to whether we should consider having speakers on a bimonthly basis, some other frequency, or continue with the current monthly program.  We believe that these activities enhance the attractiveness of our community.

3.  As you are aware, AFTM has been lucky in getting speakers who have not asked for any compensation; notwithstanding that, they do incur costs in hard cash and time to make their presentations to us.  It is time for us to find the funds to provide each speaker with a reasonable honorarium. The last two meetings we set a basket out for your volunteer contributions, and we collected $104.  We used part of those funds to buy lunch for the speakers (team members bought their own lunch).  However, we are not confident that volunteer contributions will enable us to pay the honorariums.  This is a problem, and we need your help in finding a solution.

4.  Earlier this year we approached the MBV Board for funds but were turned down.  It is now MBV election season, and perhaps the right time to let the candidates know that we want to count on their support for AFTM.  If we do have 14 presentations a year, we will not need more than $1,500 a season.

5. Finally, some of us would like to encourage other types of activities such as panel discussions, group discussions, debates or whatever format there may be interest in.  If you have such interest and are willing to take the lead, please let us know and we will do what we can to help in that endeavor.  Thank you for your attention to the above.  Please give it some serious thought and respond with your feedback to Boniface Thayil at 983-3110 or e-mail onlyhiteck@msn.com.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our next lecture.

Boniface @ 983-3110.

Ceramics at the Fired Art Studio

Ceramicists take an already formed clay body and decorate it in a variety of ways. The list is endless! The MountainBrook Ceramic Group enjoy designing and decorating many kinds of ceramic items to display, use at home, or to share with friends and relatives. The group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays and some Saturdays in the Fired Arts Studio. Any MountainBrook resident is welcome to join us from 1 pm to 4 pm Tuesday & Thursday for the open workshop where members share their knowledge. Tuesday mornings, after coffee and donuts, are reserved for orientation sessions for the newcomers to the group. We plan to hold specific classes on Thursday mornings and one Saturday a month as soon as we line up some teachers.

The group carries some basic paints, glazes, and special decorating products funded by both a $5 monthly fee and the firing fee. Exotic or special decorations (such as decals) are the responsibility of the ceramicist. The charge to fire a piece is 20% of the purchase price.  Firing is handled by group members who are trained in the art.

Friends of the Library

Your MBV library was formerly the sales office, and the light switches were installed in various areas. In fact, in the Fiction and Military areas, those light switches are located behind the bookcase units. The wiring for lights has never been changed when it became the new Library. You can turn on the lights in those two areas by looking at a sign on the shelf directly where the light switch is located. Also, there is a light switch location guide posted by the garbage can near the checkout table.

Your Library will be using a new sign out system on a trial basis for three months of Dec-Jan-Feb.  There is still an HONOR
SYSTEM for all residents but the changes are as follow:

1.  BOOKS--you "DO NOT SIGN OUT" books but do return them in "3" weeks.

2.  DVD & VHS tapes--you "DO SIGN OUT" all DVD  & VHS tapes in a designated book on the table.  Do return in "3" days and
     write in return date. Make certain disc/tape is inside case ! ! ! ! ! !

3.  AUDIO TAPES (talking books)  "DO SIGN OUT" all audio tapes in a designated book on table.  Return in "3" weeks and write
RETURN DATE.  Make certain all tapes are inside case ! ! ! ! ! !
You will notice that you need only to write the "box container number" and not titles in the new sign out books.

The reasons for these changes are because some residents stated it is hard to write in so many book titles in small lines of a
book.  Also, it should be easier to track late DVD, VHS AND audio items.  Currently there are 14 DVDs returned and there is no disc inside the box.  Volunteers will now need only to go through one book to locate name of the resident who signed out the
empty container and remind them to return the missing disc.  We realize people are being honest or else they would not bother
to return the empty box.  All items in your library are for all residents and we believe each of you will use the honor system.
Volunteers will keep a number track of return books for 3 months.  If the number of return books diminishes we will return to
the old system of signing out all books.  Movies are really popular and residents live so close to the library and they can return
them within 3 days.  Your library is open every day of the year 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 pm.
